Day 6 (Haiku/Gesundheit, Volume XXXII)

on using my first-ever privy
(or, "that wasn't bad at all!")

between port-a-pots
and dirty hotel bathrooms
i'll take a privy

[privy used during day three hike]

on being watched while taking this photograph
(or "missouri doesn't love company taking unsolicited photographs")

i shot this amused
double meaning means nothing
to confused locals

i'm glad we aren't going back the same way we came, but...
(or "maybe those pre-columbus views were right")

this way is longer
especially when sleepy
seems our world is flat

the point of no return

two hundred miles
left when the sun sets behind
a sigh holds meaning

M. and I have frequently discussed starting a map similar to the one you've posted here. I'm glad to see we're not the only ones.

I also note 2 things from that map.
1) You have sadly neglected the South. Why does everyone think we have nothing to offer?
2) You haven't been to Montana yet. Neither have I, and I really want to go. Maybe next year we could meet there?

Yeah, it bothers me too. I noticed two huge gaps here... the upper plains and the lower south (I have, to my benefit, been to Tennessee several times... does that count?).

We'll have to keep that Montana thing in mind. But I also want to catch you guys on your territory... not to mention, the Olmpics and/or Appalachia are next on the "big camping trip" list. Have you been to either?

As a Tennessean, I can confidently say, "No, it doesn't count." I'm glad you like my fair state, but the midSouth (TN, KY, VA, NC) is not The South.

Being natives to lands adjacent to Appalachia, we have both been there many times, but we have never camped there. And I haven't been there since I was a child. We wanted to go during our honeymoon trip, but there wasn't time. Camping in the Olympics is at the top of my list as well.

I notice that you haven't gotten to NJ. No loss there. *laughs* I should do the same thing. I think my map would be an interesting Hodge Podge.

I didn't know Murphy had his own law firm. Figures. :)

I'm ashamed to say that I looked at your pictures of the map for quite a while. For the life of me I couldn't figure out which state was above Colorado. I decided there is no better way to figure it out than to sing the "fifty nifty states." I was not so excited to say out loud (because I kept messing it up in my head) "could Wisconsin be the last one or is it 49? NO! Wyoming is the last state in the fifty states that rhyme!"

P.S. you are welcome for that little diddy getting stuck in your head.

XO - I laughed when I got to the part about you going through the rhyme to get to the proper state. I knew you'd be singing for awhile...

AA — We should meet in the Olympics! WA and I might even try to go snowshoeing there this winter. Not exactly good camping weather, but fun to stomp around in.
