Podcasting Call

I know, I know.

I complain about my commute all of the time. But I haven't even mentioned the worst part: there's only been one rush-hour radio program around here that I've ever really enjoyed, and it was only on for six months before most of the personalities were canned and the show was reformatted for a different — presumably hipper but most definitely louder and more obnoxious — demographic.

And I just can't take much more of the boredom. Sure, I'll turn to NPR for news, but you can only hear the same story so many times before you want something a bit less repetitive and WAY more amusing.

So, please, lend me your podcasts. Recommend your (free) favorites so that I might download them to my iPod (for free) and listen whilst I drive. To give you some idea of what I like, I'm a bit of a nut when it comes to Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me and Sound Opinions.

Did I mention I want the podcasts to be free?

Don't be fooled by the fact that, just yesterday, I bought a cute little dress for my parents' tiny new puppy (a Chihuahua/Yorkie mix).

I'm not made of money.

I get this American Life, Fresh Air, and NPR has a live concert series. Since you are into movies the "I" recommends Triple Feature Talkcast, hosted by movie webcomic guys (multiplex...).

I used to get This American Life, I enjoyed it. Those are some great stories, if you can handle Ira Glass' voice, that is.

I prefer the old 40s series, Catholic School Girls in Trouble, from WCBS. Not very many people have ever heard of it because they played it in the wee hours of the night.

Also, don't get a Bob Ross podcast. You'll be taking one of the most relaxing naps of your life until you hit the guardrail.

XOXO

There are a lot of good podcasts out there but there are also a lot of audio shows that have streaming content. You can capture them and turn them into mp3 files with a program called audio hijack or radioshift. It basically allows you to turn your computer and ipod into an old fashioned radio and tape deck.

I second Ricky Gervais. Can also recommend these guys too:

I hope that puppy is not a boy. Yawp, is it just me or is EVERYONE these days doing five hours of "radio" a day?

I did a post on this subject several months ago, and I know you read that post. But allow me to again recommend "On The Media" from NPR.

Also, The Night Air has an arty sensability you might enjoy (http://www.abc.net.au/rn/nightair)

Radio Lab on WNYC is one of the best things I've ever heard on radio.

The Slate "Daily" and "Explainer" podcasts are short and fun, as is "Martini Shot" from KCRW. "Martini Shot" is a 4 minute weekly essay from a sitcom writer. Extremely funny.

"To The Best Of Our Knowledge" is a little more cerebral than "TAL," but it's normally pretty good.

They Might Be Giants also have a fun podcast.

That's all for now. If I can think of any others, I'll let you know.

I love how I was going to be the only one to mention you dressing the dog in clothes!

So never mind I'll discuss NPR as well. So what is up with Ira Glass's voice?!

If you like Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me, you'd probably like Michael Feldman's Wahad'Ya Know?

It's a nationally syndicated NPR, but based out of Madison, Wisconsin, at the University of Wisconsin. Very similar format to both shows. But I think Waddayouknow was around first. Anyway, home page is http://www.notmuch.com. There's a ling to the podcasts near the top of the page.
